It’s important to make your precious groceries last. But, with trips to the store becoming few and far between, it’s harder to keep fresh ingredients near the top of the list. Good news, though! There are some very simple ways to improve the life of your fruits and veggies. We’ll show you how.
Fridge
Apples
They can stay crisp for 6 to 8 weeks. Just be sure to keep them away from other produce.
Berries, Cherries and Grapes
When possible, keep them in their original packaging until you’re ready to eat them. Use the berries (4 to 7 days) and cherries (4 to 10 days) first, since the grapes will last a bit longer (1 to 2 weeks).
Broccoli and Cauliflower
Keep them in a plastic bag, away from other produce. You’ll have 3 to 5 days for the broccoli, and a whole week for the cauliflower.
Celery
Stalks will keep their crunch for 1 to 2 weeks. Cover them in plastic wrap or aluminum foil.
Mushrooms
They’re good for 4 to 7 days in a clean paper bag.
Oranges
They’ll last in the crisper drawer for 3 to 4 weeks. You can do this with all citrus fruits.
Counter, Then Fridge
Avocados
You can keep these on the counter for 4 to 7 days. But, if you need more time, put them in the fridge for 3 to 5 more days.
Bananas
They’ll do their thing on the counter or a hanger for 2 to 6 days. If you want to keep them past then for smoothies or banana bread, put them in the freezer until you’re ready.
Tomatoes
If they’re ripe and ready to use, they’re OK on the counter in a bowl. Any longer and they’re better off in the fridge for 5 to 7 days. Take them out a day or two before you use them, so that you can get the best flavor.
Cupboard
Onions
Keep them away from other foods, somewhere cool, dark and dry. In the summer, they’ll be good for 1 to 2 months. In the winter, they can last up to 6 months.
Sweet Potatoes
If they’re somewhere cool, dark and dry, they’ll keep for 3 to 5 weeks.
