This Halloween has the potential to be epic! The holiday falls on a Saturday, which means that we’ll get an entire day of candy, costumes and crafts. We’ll even get a full moon.
Halloween 2020 will be the first in the coronavirus era, which means changes to your traditional celebratory routine – such as social distancing, party size limitations and hand sanitizers along the trick-or-treating route. But, just because we’ve got an eye on safety doesn’t mean that the holiday is cancelled. Instead, let’s use the occasion to brainstorm a few new creative ideas – including a bevy of fitness-based costumes that will be sure to catch everyone’s attention.
A WORKOUT #TBT:
Remember the good old days when you could pump iron with your friends at the gym or work out in group fitness classes? If you’re feeling a little nostalgic and want to reminisce, you can put on your favorite workout clothes and make a DIY social media cutout screen to hold in front of you, so you can frame yourself. You can make your screen with a cardboard box and print-outs from web images, according to “7 Fitness-Inspired Halloween Costumes You Can Throw Together Fast” for Health.
CYCLING INSTRUCTOR:
“Pulling off this costume is really about the ‘tude (Peppy! Spiritual! Relentless!) but the right gear doesn’t hurt,” according to “10 Health- and Fitness-Inspired Halloween Costumes to Wear This Year” for Shape. “Dig into your workout drawer for your bougiest leggings and top it off with an over-the-top motivational tank.” And don’t forget the wireless microphone!
BOXING CHAMP:
“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, this costume is easy as can be,” according to the Health article. You’ll need silk shorts, a towel and boxing gloves. You can also use tape instead of boxing gloves, and if you randomly have a heavyweight belt lying around – or you can find one on the cheap – you can incorporate that into this costume, too.
HIKER:
For those of you in cooler climates, you may want to consider this comfy costume, especially if the Halloween party will be outdoors. “Just rock your favorite fleece, hiking boots, and thick camp socks,” according to “33 Halloween Costumes For Fitness Fanatics” for Refinery29.
CHEERLEADERS:
If you and your friends were planning on doing a group costume, but are having some trouble coming up with ideas, the StyleCaster article “We Predict These Will Be The Biggest Halloween Costumes of 2020 recommends grabbing your pom-poms and your closest friends and going as the cheerleaders from this year’s hit cheerleading docuseries.
TRACK STAR:
“Whether you’re a marathon runner yourself or only dream of making it a mile, a track star is a simple fitness costume option,” according to Refinery29. You can go all out with running shorts and a homemade race number or keep it comfy with a warm-up jacket and track pants.
DIGITAL DETOX:
It’s very possible that we’ve become more reliant on technology and are attached to our phones and computers more than ever this year. If it’s safe for you to attend a Halloween party in person with friends, the digital detox costume might be a good choice for a couple of reasons – it’s simple and it might actually help you do a digital detox for the night. “Even if you can’t stick to one IRL, be a digital detox on Halloween night,” according to Shape. “How to pull it off: Wear whatever the heck you want and ‘lock’ your phone away in a clear plastic purse. Not only will you have the cleverest costume at the party, you’ll also actually do a digital detox for the night.” However, if you’re attending a virtual Halloween party, you might have to bite the bullet and use your computer or phone to show off your costume. But, you can still put a lock around your device if you’d like.
DODGEBALL CHAMPIONS:
“If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge having the worst costume at the party with these dodgeball-inspired costumes,” according to Jersey Strong. Just track down a purple T-shirt, black pants or leggings, black sweatbands and shoulder pads, and you’ll be good to go. If you’re truly committed and all-in on this costume, make sure to bring a dodgeball that you can carry around all night as well.
‘80S FITNESS GURU:
For men, all you need is a pair of striped (short) shorts and a tank top, according to Refinery29. You can also add high socks and a headband.
For women, “There are a few things your costume can’t go without: mainly a fun leotard, bright, solid-colored leggings, leg warmers, and a skinny belt,” according to “Create The Perfect 80s Workout Costume With This Retro Activewear” for Women’s Health. Ankle weights and sweatbands are optional, but highly encouraged, according to Women’s Health. Refinery29 says, “Big hair is a must.”
ROCK CLIMBER:
For this costume, wear your rock climbing harness, climbing shoes and a helmet, according to Refinery29. And if you have a friend, family member or partner who hasn’t decided on a costume yet, convince them to dress up as your climbing wall.
REFEREE:
You can “call fouls on your friends all evening in this easy costume that requires minimal investment,” according to Jersey Strong. You’ll need a black-and-white vertical-striped shirt or a black athletic polo, a baseball cap, a whistle and dark pants. For bonus points, bring a foul flag and/or a headset microphone.
